Abstract
The French school of water is often promoted internationally. Can the experience of French private companies be successfully exported? The purpose of the present article is to examine on a study how the involvement of Générale des Eaux in the operation of a large water service in Malaysia resulted in quality improvements and technologie transfer. C.G.E. Utilities, a subsidiary of Générale des Eaux, operates and maintains 26 water treatment plants supplying Selangor State and the capital Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. Attentive to local specificity, CGE is putting in place measures that are tailored to the situation encountered. "Best practices" are implemented in the form of changes in organisation and new procedures. Technology transfer is achieved through intensive training and through the implementation of new technologies during rehabilitation works. After three years of operation with very few expatriates, substantial results have been achieved in terms of treated water quality and reliability of supply.
