Mapping runoff within the GEWEX-Rhone project

Abstract
In the framework of the cooperating research GEWEX-Rhone project, runoff mapping was examined. Two versions of a mesoscale hydrological model were tested and interpolation procedures provide objective basis for comparison between observed and simulated discharge data at regional scale. Specific algorithms based on kriging were developed to rnap mean annual and monthly streamflows within the French part of the Rhone basin. Mean annual runoff values are calculated involving a spatial disaggregation of the annual volume generated by the area under study. Monthly discharges are deduced from the map of the mean annual runoff and are estirnated with respect to the autocorrelation between successive months and the links to the river network.
