Wise use of riparian woods

Abstract
Public opinion values riparian woods due to their potential role in mitigating diffuse pollution along river courses. However, a too exclusive focus on the buffer role of riparian woods may lead to neglect their most interesting property, multifunctionality. This property is considered with regards to the ecological dynamics of riparian systems and management practices in order to stabilize river banks, to improve water quality and to manage large woody debris. Accounting for the variability of riparian woods as well as for their landscape dimension appears as a first condition of their wise use along rivers.
