Abstract
The evolution of the hydraulic energy and the means to produce it is being pennanent for more than 100 years. The turbines dimensions and their performances evolved. Their type also evolved answering to more and more specific needs. The environment constrain and the market necessity leads engineers and decision markers to every day reinvent new concepts to adapt design and exploitation to modern standards. We summarise in this paper some of the innovations in means and concepts that allow this evolution. The laying out of the large turbines, the requirements linked to the refurbishment problems and the means to solve them are presented. Some of the innovations linked to the environment problems are presented, notably the concepts of the fish friendly turbines, Dissolved oxygen enhancement and the greaseless turbines. An illustration is also given of the new means and methods in the turbine conception and realisation. The importance of CFD and FEM codes is underlined, and a specific presentation is made about blades optimisation and generation. At last two innovative products are presented : the hooped pelton and the MINI-AQUA especially adapted to mini-Hydro.
