Wave impacts evaluation in LNG carriers tanks

Abstract
The motions of liquid in the tanks of LNG carriers lead to violent impacts, the assessment of which is essential to ensure the correct structural behaviour of the insulating boxes recovering the bulkheads. IRCN has been developing jointly with the French software company CISI a software called DIVA3D dedicated to the simulation of liquid motions in tanks the movements of which are forced.
This software allows to predict whether impacts will occur and if so, where they will take place, and to compare the intensity of two impacts by means of kinetic energy calculations, but it is not suited to a refined analysis of the fluid/structure interaction during impacts. A parametrlc study of the structural behaviour under shocks of the insulating boxes was carried out with the explicit LS-DYNA3D software which allows to simulate fast transient loading problems. It has shown the different types of structural behaviour of an insulating box under forced impulsive loads.
IRCN wishes to interface as soon as possible DIVA3D and LS-DYNA3D so as to simulate the hydroelastic interaction as an impact dynamic problem with LS-DYNA3D in the realistic flow conditions as simulated by DIVA3D.
