Abstract
After a brief recall of biophysical mechanisms governing transpiration and sap flow in trees, some typical examples of time-course of tree transpiration are presented. Major sources of variation in tree transpiration are shown : among trees within a forest stand, between tree species. Temporal variation is linked to tree phenology and to water shortage inducing xylem dysfunction (cavitation and embolism).
