Abstract

An evaluation of the French policy of protection of the water resources intended for the production of drinking water was carried out in 2000 and 2001 under the aegis of the National Council of the Evaluation. It results a report and proposals from them. If the point sources of pollutant emissions are relatively well controlled, diffuse pollution constitutes a serious threat, particularly for ground waters in the areas with strong agricultural activity. This is the reason why the report invites "to change ambition" and to build a policy which implements regulations, economic instruments and voluntary agreements articulated in a coherent way to achieve clearly posted goals.
