A distinction is made between large obstacles at sea and small structures compared to the wave length. The behaviour of large structures in waves can now be calculated with the aid of a computer program designed for industrial use. Attempts have also been made to establish whether simplified methods can provide an initial approach to this type of calculation, applying simplifications based on the Green function or the shape of the obstacle. The effect of these approximations was investigated by considering a Green function reduced to 1/R or by considering the structure as an assembly of simple forms (cylinders). The results showed that the use of such simplified calculation methods requires considerable caution.
