Abstract
In France, there is nearly no information to the public about groundwaters, except for scientific purposes. A general public may find a relatively dense information about the level of aquifers, especially for aquifers that are concerned by strong pressures, but nearly nothing about the quality of water. A lack of public awareness for these invisible water bodies, contrary to rivers, is the main reason. The difficulty to find representative data and to define methods for a synthetic assessment are others reasons. The framework water directive makes obligatory to inform the public. The authorities in charge of water districts will have to communicate on the state of the groundwater bodies much more than now.
