Abstract
European citizens are increasingly demanding clean water, clean water for drinking but also clean surface waters and groundwaters as part of their heritage to be protected. The Water Framework Directive, published in December 2000, presents a range of new aspects:
- coherent protection of all waters in Europe, surface waters and groundwaters
- ambitious objectives for groundwaters in terms of quality as well as quantity. Given these challenges, administrations of Member States and the Commission have agreed on a Common Implementation Strategy for the directive, involving all interested parties.
