The 1856 flood in France: damages and consequences

Abstract
The may-june 1856 floods have been catastrophic on the Loire and Rhône basins and in a lower measure also on Garonne and Seine Basins. Human losses have been insignificant. On the other hand urban areas, infrastructures and also agriculture have been strongly affected. A general losses board is presented. Concerning prevention, 1856 flood initiated a large public works program to protect fluvial towns (28th mai 1858 law). This event prepared also development of local floods warning system along french rivers.
