Abstract
River development in the developing countries is driven by two often conflicting requirements: the use of rivers for domestic uses, breeding, agriculture fish farming, crafts and industry, transport, energy, tourism and drainage of sewerage; protection of men and installations against the negative effects of rivers (floods, transmission of diseases, propagation of pollutants, divarication of the river bed, and danger for works built to cross the river). A major demographical increase, increased urbanization, all lead to intensified river development. Projects must be accompanied by measures to limit the negative effects. Some examples are developed in the article to illustrate these various aspects.
