Résumé

Des nombreuses inondations « catastrophiques » des siècles passées, il reste les souvenirs enfouis dans la mémoire des habitants, des marques sur des édifices et… des informations plus ou moins importantes et précises suivant l’ancienneté de l’événement. Toutes ces informations étant fréquemment dispersées dans de nombreux organismes et pas forcément archivées, leur exploitation est difficile et souvent négligée en France. Cependant, depuis quelques années, des études sont entreprises pour valoriser ces données, qualitatives et/ou quantitatives, qui apportent des informations sur des phénomènes extrêmes absents d’un passé récent mais pouvant toujours survenir. La première information livrée par ces études est l’importance de l’étendue spatiale des phénomènes hydro-climatologiques qui engendrent des crues catastrophiques. Ainsi en octobre 1872, une des crues majeures de la Loire fut concomitante avec des crues d’ampleur similaire en Espagne et dans le Piémont italien.

Abstract

From the many catastrophic floods of the past, only remains dim recollection deeply buried in the memories of old riverside residents, some marks on buildings and more or less important and accurate information, according to the time of occurrence of the flood. All this information in France is quite often scattered among different places and offices and it is not necessarily always archived. It is therefore difficult to retrieve and use it. This information is also much too often neglected.

A few years ago studies were undertaken so as to enhance these qualitative and quantitative data, providing information on extreme phenomena which didn’t occur in a recent past but which could happen again. The first information collected from these studies is the knowledge that the area affected by the hydro-climatological phenomena which generate catastrophic floods is very large. For example, in October 1872 one of the biggest flood on the Loire river occurred at the same time as such similar tremendous floods in Spain and in Italy as well.
